With a newsletter published INPS communicated the yearly social allowance benefit for 2016. The benefit’s amount will now be € 5.824,91 (€ 448.07 per month for 13 months).
The benefit’s amount is crucial for foreign citizens, as it sets the minimum income needed to apply for family reunification or EC residence permit for long-term residents. In particular:
in order to apply for family reunification, the foreign citizen can request an entry clearance for one or more relatives, according to article 29 of Legislative Decree n. 286, July 25, 1998, Testo Unico Immigrazione, if he/she proves they have an income equal to the yearly social allowance plus 50% for each person they want to reunite with (see chart below);
foreign citizens applying for the long-term EC residence permit, according to article 9 of Legislative Decree n. 286, July 25, 1998, must prove they have an income equal to the yearly social allowance.

To reunite with two or more children under the age of 14, the minimun income requested for 2016 is € 11.649,82. Beyond the 14-year-old children, for each additional reuniting person (such as spouse, parents, or kids over the age of 14), an additional amount of € 2.912,46 per person must be added to the initial € 11.649,82. To apply for the EU residence permit the amounts are the same.
