Dear Sir or Madam,
We are the spokesmen for about 300 people who have been granted Refugee Status or Humanitarian Protection by the Italian government.
We live in Milan, where local authorities, in the last years, have not helped us find safe and dignified living accommodations.
Local authorities have also failed to provide both linguistic and vocational courses, much needed in order to attain our socio-cultural and economic integration in this country (where we are compelled to live in).
No specific psychological assistance is offered to those of us who are torture victims.
From the legal standpoint, many problems arise from the extreme difficulty in obtaining and renewing our Permit to Stay and other important documents (i.e. travel documents) from the Police
Immigration Office.
At present, we are all living in a former engine-shed, without electricity, and under deplorable and extremely unsanitary conditions that have resulted in serious health problems for some of us.
We sleep on the floor with rats, and some of us have developed tuberculosis.
The only solutions arranged by local authorities so far consist in emergency programmes inside dormitories, devoid of all furnishings or services other than beds.
This situation has been going on for some years now in Milan, and has resulted in several hundreds of refugees and, mostly, people granted Humanitarian Protection, living in different abandoned areas of the city, moving from one to another when cleared out.
We hereby present an urgent request for your assistance in order to end this deplorable situation.
We will greatly appreciate the opportunity for a meeting, as soon as next week, when we are willing and able to meet with you.
