An initiative promoted by Slovenian networks (from Lubjana, Postumia and Nova Gorica) and the Italian network of sportelli degli invisibili in front of a Slovenian detention centre. The initiative’s aim was to publicly report of the shameful existence of such a lager a few days before the enlargement of EU. Ten new countries are to become EU and Slovenia is one of them.
The detention centre net was surrounded and violated by the 70 people that gave life to the protest. The same people managed to talk to the detainees via the use of a megaphone.
In Slovenia there is very little debate on such structure, for the first time ever Slovenian antiracist networks have denounced the existence of such places in their own country.
“Europe which Slovenia is to enter from May 1st on is everyday more and more Fortress Europe. It is not an open space as Prodi will try to show next April 30th in Gorizia in occasion of the celebrations from the enlargement of EU” This is what Andrea said during the correspondences recorded by Sherwood Radio.
The initiative was also animated by the presence of a delegation of the so-called “erased”: 18.000 citizens who were cancelled from Slovenian General Registry Office since they are not Slovenian from birth.
There are three detention centres in Slovenia and a fourth is being actually built. The three are in Maribor, Lubjana and Postumia and at the moment they are being enlarged.
