Can a person only holding a tourism visa possibly work?

Question: A Rumenian boy aged 20 arrived two weeks ago in Italy. He hold a three-month long tourism visa. Can he look for a job in the meanwhile? Is the visa extendable to other three months?

Answer: Romania is one of the countries not obliged to visa in case of tourism. People coming from Romania do not need visas to enter Schengen space since January 1 2002.

In general

Tourism visas do not allow to any kind of work. Once a person reaches Italy, he or she must refer to police headquarters within 8 days his/her entry otherwise expulsion might occur. After these 8 days, no renewal is allowed according to the new law and expulsion can immediately be perpetuated via taking the person to the borders. In case the boy asked for tourism visa, he could ask for the conversion in order to be able to regularly work. The release of tourism visa is discretionary, in fact Bossi-Fini law provides for that the denial of tourism visa doesn’t need to be justified by the qualified embassy. In other words law states that releasing tourism visas is discretionary. Once a foreign person is in Italy with a tourism visa (or comes from a country not needing visas), residence papers cannot last longer than the visa itself. Visas usually specify the time of stay allowed by Schengen space. Tourism visas do not last longer than three months and it is therefore absolutely discretionary and rare to have the visa renewed for extra three months. Only peculiar and certified circumstancies (such as health matters) might see police headquarters allow the extension.

Remember: In case people go to police headquarters with expired turism visas, they risk immeditae expulsion.
