Deportations – EU condemns Italian deportation but the government goes on

An Interview with Tana De Zulueta, senator

Wednesday, May 18th left wing parties’ members of the Parliament called for a press conference in order to report what happens in Lampedusa, inside the detention and identification centres in Crotone and Caltanissetta.
The conference explained that members of the parliament and associations are to work together to control shores, deportations and that an operative centre is to open in Lampedusa against mass expulsions. The initiative’s aim is to quickly intervene and activate networks to inform and denounce eventual violations of human rights.

The government has in fact chosen not to respect international conventions and laws in concern of human right. In spite of the recent intervention of the EU Court in Strasbourg, in spite of the words of journalists and EU Commission technicians repatriations go on and the detention inside detention centres is every day worse to migrants. We talked about this initiative together with Tana De Zulueta, senator.

Question - What has been recently happening?
Answer - We called the press conference to refer about an obscure piece of news on expulsions and repatriations to Libya. The news is obscure because we even do not know numbers of repatriated citizens… We believe that this operation with Libya is subtle, the government is answering to EU Court with another provocation: it keeps massively deporting migrants towards a country that is risky and where human rights are not respected. In addition to this migrants are under the risk of other expulsions towards other dangerous countries.

Question - What do you members of parliament mean to do?
Question - We asked the government to clarify circumstances. What happened? Whom did they expelled? Where? Why?
We also explained we are getting together in a crisis unity to face all emergencies, which we believe are to be every day more since summer is starting. Lawyers, members of the parliament, ngos, associations are to be ready to go inside detention centres, where migrant citizens are put at their arrival in Italy. We hope to be able to safeguard their rights and to help them in defence and in defending their rights.
