Migrants nightmare. An appeal to build a delegation that visits North Africa

12 May 2005

Some weeks ago European networks published an appeal that demands that a delegation of members of EU parliament (from different countries and members of human rights groups) go as soon as possible where detention centres are set outside Schengen borders. These centres are paid by EU. This delegation should monitor detention centres and demand their closure.
Melting Pot adheres to this initiative and shall spread the appeal in order to have a delegation really go to Africa.

Some reflections
Human rights are seriously violated in North Africa, as the report written by the technicians that visited Libya. The report was given to European Commission as a consequence of a visit that took place from November 28th to December 6th 2004, the visit’s aim was to study illegal immigration.
The report shows how deportations from Italy to Libya do occur but also from Libya to Egypt, Syria, Pakistan, Niger, Nigeria, Ghana. Bangladesh, Mali, Sudan and Eritrea. Italy signed a super secret agreement with Libya and Italian role is strategic, most of all because it finances Gheddafi’s government.
Funding will also help the construction of deportation camps (one of them is already operative). What happens in Morocco, Libya and in many others African countries needs to be immediately denounced and stopped. Thousands of human lives are in danger and there have already been to many victims caused by this system that violates all human rights.
We believe that a delegation must be urgently created, this delegation must visit such countries and must show everyone what happens there. Deportation and detention centres must be immediately closed.
Movements in Europe have always launched campaigns in order to have all detention centres closet and against the airlines that earn money out of expulsion. A great network organised April 1st and 2nd initiatives…
But institutions need to get involved as well. A first step towards this is the resolution voted past April against the deportations from Lampedusa to Libya. Today we need to do more: we need to collect proof and evidence of the situation and above all we need to change it.
