February 10 – Antifascist Demo in Macerata, Italy

#overthefortress Campaign: urgent call for solidarity

Luca Traini, a fascist terrorist, took a car Saturday 3rd of February and started to shot with a gun to all the black people that he was able to see. He injured at least 6 people before getting caught. He surrendered to the police with an Italian flag on his shoulder under a fascist monument doing the Roman salute. It was clearly a planned attack. That’s happened in Macerata, a town in the centre of Italy.

Since then, instead of condemning the attack, a fascist wave invaded all the spectrum of Italian media and institutions. The main narration of all the major parties and mainstream media is that the attack was caused by “too many immigrants in Italy”. The electoral campaign, which will finish in less than one month, it is now completely about who will deport away the major number of immigrants (Lega Nord, Forza Italia and other) and who will prevent them to arrive (Movimento 5 stelle, Partito Democratico).

Grassroots activists from all over Italy called a demonstration in Macerata the 10th of February against any fascism and racism. The Government asked to suspend all the protests, both the fascist and the antifascist, which were supposed to happen in Macerata. Marco Minniti, the Minister of Interior, stated that the institutions will block any attempt to demonstrate. The big antifascist associations that were meant to attend, like CGIL, ANPI, Libera and Arci, stated that they canceled the protest, even if they didn’t organize it.

We are passing through a terrifying democratic crisis that has no history in Italy since the Fascism. They are trying to put fascism and anti-fascism on the same level, and to erase the fundamental rights of all of us. We, as #overthefortress campaign, will participate in the demo in Macerata to express our solidarity with the victims and to clearly state that the problem is not immigration, but the social and political emergence of fascism. We invite everyone to spread this appeal and to show their solidarity as much as possible.

They cannot forbid anti-fascism. They will not convince us that migrants are the problem and not the racists. The demonstration will take place no matter what. And all the signs point out that will be just the beginning of a long resistance.

For the migrant’s rights, against any fascism and racism.
