A visit inside Lametia Terme (Calabria) detention centre

The report of Forum dei diritti di Bari

September 26 a delegation organized by tavolo migranti a by Rifondazione party entered Lametia terme detention centre, unjustly called “first accomodation centre”.
The delegation found an unbelievable situation, that is simply called an “exceptional legal system that shouldn’t be considered legal” .

The structure seems to be under “modernization”, high barb wire fences are being built. Inside about 70 migrants live in non human conditions reminded us of the first psychiatry hospitals. Rooms have no windows nor doors, no heating, no beds only matresses put on the floor, few toilets, no changes in linens or in clothings, “beds” are put also outside dorms in open air. Hygiene is completely missing, no running hot water and instead of water tabs there are plastic pumps. There are no tables, no chairs, no canteen, people eat on the bed, no communication to the world outside. There is a phone box, but no phone cards arrive in the centre. Having a lawyer is discretional and the only legal advisor is chosen by the centre. We met people of different origins, some entered Italy with tourism visas and just after a few days they were taken by police to the centre without having anyone explain them what was going on.

We also met people about to go back home, even holding airplane tickets, they were stopped by police and takenn there.
There was also a man, married to an Italian woman with child, who cannot talk to his family. Many people have regularization forms on them. There is an asylum seeker who was tortured back home and here tried to commit suicide, the doctor told him: “die as an animal”.

We report of this situation and the fact that cooperativa sociale “Malgrado tutto” runs the place.

The cooperative gains 45 euro a person a day.
Despite all reports against this lager, new centres are to be built in Puglia, Liguria and campania.
