Ceuta – European Caravan Against the Death Fence

Day One of Mobilitizations

Today the European caravan in Ceuta has begun to denounce the barbery comitted in the name of European democracy. In response to the recent border shootings commited against people crossing into Spanish territory, groups from all parts of Europe have come together for two days of mobilitation against the so-called Death Fence. This morning the caravan is in a march through the city of Ceuta, heading towards the heavily militerized border zone.

The demonstration, composed of around 500 people, marches through the town with music and colorful banners. Although some of the inhabitants in this border town are not particularly in agreement with this demmonstration, many young people have decided to participate in the march.

After passing throught the city, the march has now reached the Death Fence where 6 people were shot and killed by the Spanish civil guard while attempting to jump the fence using ladders only a few weeks ago. Upon seeing the fence, activists commented on the remarkable resemblance to the wall in Palestine, especially for the hundreds of meters of barbed wire that entwine it.

Hundreds of activists taking part in a symbolic action of civil disobedience have put up ladders against the Death Fence and decorating them with flowers, notes and pictures in memory of all the casualties in this corner of the permanent global war.
