The entrance to Italy for practical nurses isn’t managed on the sphere of annual amount but among the entrances called “out of quota” and so there are no numerical limits and one doesn’t need to wait the publication of concerning decrees to present the hiring authorization request at work provincial direction.
We are talking about nurses hired by public and private sanitary structures, endowed with the qualification recognized from Department of Health.
The recognition of qualification
The procedure for qualification recognition (suitable on circular 12 april 2000 of Department of Health) may be activated from the employer interested on hiring from abroad or from the person concerned if he/she already has a regular visa.
For the recognition it will be valued non only the held diploma, but also the studies curriculum, because apart from the qualification it must be translated at the competent Italian diplomatic or consular representation the whole studies program, with indication of hours amount of each subject, for every course year.
Once obtained the qualification recognition, the path ends with the inscription at professional register, prior check, by the competent professional order, of Italian language knowledge and of special dispositions which regulate the professional exercise in Italy.

Procedure: the work authorization must be requested at Sportello Unico for immigration, with the filling of Modello O and the electronic transmission by the employer.
The subjects legitimated for hire are:
– public or private sanitary structures
– employment exchanges
– co-op societies, if they directly manage the whole sanitary structure, or one or their units or services

Documents requested for the visa:
The visa is allowed prior authorization issued upon request by the employer.
Sportello Unico will send to Rappresentanza (=representation) the work authorization and the proposal for contract for job residence permit. The latter must be communicated to the person concerned.

3. a valid travel document with expiration-date 3 months longer than the required visa.
In order to entrance and visa request, the authorization can be used within 120 days from the issuing date.
Entrance in Italy
The foreigner within 8 days from the entrance in Italy must go to Ufficio Unico to subscribe a residence contract, presenting a request for accomodation suitability and documentation certifying the accomodation availability.
Working in Italy
For exercising the profession the foreigner nurse must require the inscription to provincial college of working place or domicile. The inscription is subordinate to the overtaking of an Italian language, code of conduct and laws concerning the profession exam.
The issued authorization may be used to found a new working relationship only if it is the same profession previously permitted and it’s not convertible.
The visa is renewable without the extension request asked for other “out of quota” entrances.
