Solidarity action for women confined on Lesbos island

Hygienic kit for women in Moria camp in Lesvos

Donate hygienic products to women confined in Greece inside Moria camp on the hotspot-island of Lesvos

On our way home from the survey trip promoted by Melting Pot Europa on the greek Island of Lesbos in the aegean sea, a compulsory passing point in the crossing of the migratory route through Turkey to Europe, we decided to put up the campaign #LesvosCalling, attempting to create moments and practic solutions of true solidarity for the thousands of people who are confined in this site amongst the other greek islands that lie in front of the turkish coasts.

Circumstancial premises

17.000 women, children and men are stuck living in- or outside Moria camp, finding shelter in weak tents or huts, waiting as far as 2 years to approach the procedure for their asylum application. This is the consequence of the new political forms of enclosure operated by the european governance , represented by the otrageous European Union-Turkey deal signed 18 March, 2016.

Women

A humanitarian emergency in which women, representing 30% of population in the camp, especially single ones, are the most vulnerable : not only they suffer different forms of violence during their travel to Europe, also once they arrive in the hotspot, they’re completely left on their own, no specific aid is given to them.
The lack of comfort, intimacy, hot water or any other specific service makes it all so hard that even basic habits like daily personal hygiene can become impossible: neither going to the toilet at nighttime nor taking a shower are something easy to do. As they arrive at the camp they are given a small quantity of goods, like a bunch of menstrual pads: the firsts and lasts to be offered for free. If they’re “lucky” enough to bring some money, they might pursue the products by themselves, or they’ll feel forced to use cloths, toilet paper or pages from newspapers.

The aim of the campaign

This part of the project is due to donate compostable hygienic pads, intimate soaps and undergarments to women who stay inside Moria camp.
Surviving in such inhuman conditions threatens even more the hidden issues about female sexuality and health. Making these bio-pads available for women means giving them back some of the choice and dignity they’ve been deprived of, like the confidence they need to step out other tents. To give them detergents and brand new underwear is to prevent infections and diseases, which are constantly putting every woman in danger.

You can donate the amount you want by choosing one or more kits::
10€ KIT: compostable hygienic pads x2 pack (28 pcs) or intimate soap x1 or panties x6
15€ KIT: compostable hygienic pads x2 pack (28 pcs) or intimate soap x1 + panties x3
20€ KIT: compostable hygienic pads x2 pack (28 pcs) + intimate soap x1
30€ KIT: compostable hygienic pads x4 (56 pcs) + intimate soap x1 + panties x6

About us

We are a network formed by associations and informal groups which are engaged in projects and events for mutualism, giving direct support to people, sharing information and raising awareness about human rights and anti-racism.
Across our own cities we build up opportunities like Italian courses, spots for legal assistance, artistic workshops to support people’s creativity; what we reckon, anyway, is that we need to get to a larger, european scale to guarantee equal rights for everyone. #LesvosCalling is a campaign for shelter, and it’s still open to anybody who’d like to participate lively.
