Bassano Romano (VT) – The town council resolution that modifies the city statute

We interviewed Giancarlo Torricelli, Bassano Romano vice major.

“The city council of Bassano Romano has been involved in the promotion of citizenship rights to migrant citizens for a long time. We are working for the extension of new rights on the whole and on a municipal welfare which should include people not exclude them. Our choice came long before the government proposal. Our proposal concerns the fact that all citizens living in the council, the ones having to face housing matters, services problems, schooling, hold the right to partake public life. We thought it normal to modify our statute in such a sense.”

Question – What do you think of Fini’s proposal?

Answer – Fini’s proposal simply is the right wing proposal which is determining its position within its own coalition on migrant people back. I think that this law is unacceptable, it introduces new discriminations, even income differences! I wonder how some political parties or coalitions are taking into consideration the chance of finding an agreement with the right wing on such a matter. I find much more interesting what some municipalities, councils, local administrations are trying to bring on: they are working on the territory in order to enlarge rights. This is a way that can affirm a new inclusive idea that puts an eye on the new forms of poverties our places are living through.
